What’s the Big Deal?

We all know that a proper chemical balance is important, but why is it so important? Proper water chemistry and sanitization not only ensures clear, sparkling water but it also ensures that your pool is safe for you, your family, and friends. Unbalanced water chemistry can cause harmful bacteria and algae to grow in your pool, both of which can pose health risks to swimmers.

Important Chemical Factors

So what do you need to know when it comes to water balances? Chemical factors are one part of the equation, so let’s take a look at pH balance, alkalinity, and calcium hardness.

pH Balance

This describes how acidic your pool water is. A pH balance that is too low can cause etching and erosion to pool surfaces while one that is too high can cause scaling. Ideally, your pool’s pH balance should be between 7.4 and 7.6.

Alkalinity

This defines the ability of pool water to resist changes in pH that would make the water more acidic. Ideal alkalinity levels are 100-150 ppm.

Calcium Hardness

Improper calcium hardness can adversely affect water conditions in a pool. If it is too low, the water might feel slimy and it can take on a corrosive quality. When it is too high, water may turn cloudy and conditions for scaling are prime. For the best results, calcium hardness should be between 150 and 400 ppm.

Common Sanitizers

Proper sanitization is another part of proper water chemistry, as it helps control algae and bacterial growth. Three common pool sanitizers include:

  • Chlorine. Found in granular, liquid, and tablet form, chlorine disinfects water and keeps algae away. This is the most common sanitizer for outdoor pools. Pool owners should aim for chlorine levels between 2.0 and 4.0 ppm.
  • Bromine. Lacks the potent smell of chlorine, but may not be as effective. It cannot be used in outdoor pools as it is very sensitive to UV light. Pool owners should aim for levels between 3.0 and 5.0 ppm.
  • Biguanide. This sanitizer is more expensive than chlorine and it is incompatible with common pool chemicals, including chlorine and bromine. Pool owners should aim for levels between 30 and 50 ppm.
